Job Description

Web/ Graphic Designer

Job Summary: Responsible for the layout, visual appearance and usability of a client or customer website. This role may overlap with that of a multimedia programmer and web architect. Using a combination of graphic design skills and technical knowledge of how web pages are created. Web designers will have knowledge of graphic design packages such as Fireworks or Photoshop in order to produce basic layout and manipulate images. Expert skills in html mark-up and cascading style sheets and server side technologies, such as PHP, MySQL is essential to the performance of this position.

Primary Responsibilities:

Serves as the customer or client liaison at the initial design stage, finding the answers to questions about why the site is needed, who the target audience will be, sites that are viewed as competitors, etc;
Responsible for the production of designs that will be attractive to the target user, have a logical navigation system, possess all required features, and is functionally efficient in terms of code
Makes recommendations to clients and to other staff on available options that they might want to consider
Writes and Designs efficient web pages in a combination of codes, such as HTML and XHTML, CSS, Javascript, Actionscript, Flash, or using code-generating programs, such as Dreamweaver and Visual Studio;
Decides how images and other material will be optimized and presented for the web
Tests the site for functionality in different browsers and at different resolutions
Maintains accurate quality control, including fixing errors as required

Qualifications

2 years minimum experience with HTML/XHTML and CSS
2 years minimum Web programming experience
Background in fine arts, graphic design, and web development combined with college courses or a degree in a computer related field, and continuing education courses in related software packages or web development skills desired
Training and/or experience in computer graphics packages such as Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Paint Shop Pro
Knowledge and experience of other programming languages such as PHP, Cold Fusion or Java desirable
Thorough knowledge of Cascading Style Sheets
Working knowledge of development editors such as Dreamweaver, Eclipse, or Homesite
Must be comfortable working with a variety of operating systems such as Windows and Macintosh.
Experience developing and implementing open source software projects
Self-starter with strong self-management skills
Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
